Government pays two months' rent for public housing tenants
***********************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Housing Authority:

Domestic tenants of public rental housing of the Housing Authority (HA) need not pay rent for August and September 2011.

The provision of the two-month rent payment for public housing tenants is one of the relief measures announced by the Financial Secretary in February this year in the Budget to ease the pressure of inflation and rising prices on people's livelihood.

"The Government will pay the rent in full for tenants and licensees of HA paying normal rent. As for tenants and licensees paying additional rent, the Government will pay on their behalf the portion of their net rent for two months and they are required to pay the portion of their additional rent," a spokesman for the HA said today (July 14).

The Authority will notify the tenants and licensees of this arrangement.

Funding for the rent payment was approved by the Finance Committee of the Legislative Council in June 2011. About 690 000 HA households will benefit from the two months' rent payment by the Government, amounting to $1.81 billion.
