*********************************************************

The 2011 School Sports Programme (SSP) Prize Presentation Ceremony was held at the Shek Kip Mei Park Sports Centre today (July 7) to present the awards of the 2011 Easy Sport Competition and the sportACT Active School Awards.

The Easy Sport Competition is an annual event that aims to build primary students' interest in sport and boost their confidence. The competition held this school year was well received with 2,645 students from 106 schools taking part in a total of 11 sports competitions, namely badminton, fencing, athletics, mini-tennis, mini-squash, three-on-three basketball, dragon dance, soft volleyball, TRY rugby, cricket and handball. A total of 196 prizes were presented to the students in today's ceremony.

The Active School Awards are presented to schools that have 25 per cent or more of their students achieving the sportACT Award. This is to commend their efforts in promoting "one student, one sport". More than 188,000 students from a total of 376 secondary schools, primary schools and special schools participated in the sportACT Award Scheme in the 2010-11 school year, and 169 schools won the Active School Awards. Ever since the sportACT Award was launched in 2006, 27 schools have gained Active School Awards for five consecutive years. In this regard, an extra award, the Excellent sportACT School Award, was given to the schools in appreciation of their participation in consecutive awards.

The Easy Sport Programme and the sportACT Award Scheme are the subsidiary programmes of the School Sports Programme. These programmes are co-ordinated and subvented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) and organised by various national sports associations.

As in past years, the LCSD hopes that through events like the one held today schools can remind their students to actively participate in the sportACT Summer Active Challenge during the summer vacation to sustain their regular participation in physical exercise, to keep fit and to win relevant awards.

Officiating at today's ceremony were the Convener of the Student Sports Activities Co-ordinating Sub-committee, Mr Liu Ah-chuen; the Subcommittee Vice-convener, Mrs Stella Lau; the Assistant Director of Health (Health Promotion), Dr Regina Ching; the Chief Curriculum Development Officer (Physical Education) of the Education Bureau, Mr Ho Chun-ip; and the Chief Leisure Manager (Sports Development), Ms Annie Lam, of the LCSD.
