Hong Kong athletes return from Special Olympics World Summer Games in triumph (with photos)

     The Hong Kong, China, Delegation that took part in the Special Olympics World Summer Games returned in triumph today (July 6) from the host city of Athens, Greece, having fetched a total of 115 medals, including 58 gold medals, 27 silver medals and 30 bronze medals.

     A ceremony was held by the Government at the Hong Kong International Airport to welcome the Hong Kong athletes home. The Director of Leisure and Cultural Services, Mrs Betty Fung, extended congratulations to them for their outstanding results and expressed gratitude for their efforts and participation.

     She praised the athletes for their excellent performances and high spirit, which has not only helped to continue Hong Kong's past achievements in the Special Olympics World Games but also demonstrated their strength to excel in the international sporting scene.

     She said she hoped that members of the community can continue their support for local athletes with intellectual disabilities participating in major international sports events so that they can show their full potential and abilities.

     The Special Olympics World Summer Games, held every four years, is a major international sports event for athletes with intellectual disabilities. A total of 76 Hong Kong athletes took part in the Special Olympics World Summer Games held in Athens this year between June 25 and July 4.

     During the 10-day Games, Hong Kong athletes competed in nine sports events including athletics, badminton, bocce, bowling, football, golf, gymnastics, swimming and table tennis.

     Also at the airport to greet the returning delegation were the Acting Deputy Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Benjamin Mok, and the Deputy Director of Leisure and Cultural Services, Mr Bobby Cheng.
