CE meets Australian Prime Minister (with photos/video)
******************************************************

The Chief Executive, Mr Donald Tsang, met the Australian Prime Minister, Ms Julia Gillard, and a number of politicians in Canberra this morning (June 23) in the last day of his visit to Australia.

At the bilateral meeting, Mr Tsang exchanged views with the Prime Minister on the latest developments of Hong Kong and Australia. Both leaders agreed to strengthen cooperation in various areas, ranging from trade and investment to tourism and education.

Emphasising that Hong Kong is China's global financial centre and the signatory of the most preferential trade pact, the Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement with Mainland China, Mr Tsang encouraged Australian companies to list in Hong Kong, issue Renminbi bonds and set up offices.

Earlier in the morning, the Chief Executive also met the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Kevin Rudd; the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Tony Abbott; and the Deputy Leader of the Opposition and Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ms Julie Bishop.

The Chief Executive suggested that both sides should work on a bilateral free trade agreement, the abolition of double taxation, and an increase in flight services. The Australian Prime Minister, the Foreign Minister and the Leader of the Opposition were receptive to the ideas.

The Chief Executive will arrive in Sydney this afternoon to attend the reception for the unveiling of a heritage plaque for Hong Kong House before departing for Hong Kong tonight.
