To help secondary school leavers prepare for this year's release of results of the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination, the Education Bureau (EDB) is providing comprehensive information on the progression pathways for school leavers.
An EDB spokesman said today (June 23), "There are multiple pathways for Secondary Seven graduates to develop their potential. In addition to the 284 publicly funded degree and 154 sub-degree programmes offered by the eight University Grants Committee-funded institutions, the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and the Vocational Training Council, there are 65 self-financing locally accredited degree programmes and 302 self-financing sub-degree programmes to be offered in the 2011-12 academic year".
Details of all accredited self-financing post-secondary programmes can be found in the EDB's Information Portal for Accredited Self-financing Post-secondary Programmes, or iPASS, website (www.ipass.gov.hk). For each programme, comprehensive information provided includes topics such as tuition fees, entry requirements and accreditation and recognition by relevant professional bodies (where applicable). Institution-related information has also been updated on the iPASS website, including student enrolment figures, qualifications of teaching staff, teaching facilities available and articulation and employment statistics of institutions' sub-degree graduates last year.
The EDB, in conjunction with the Hong Kong Association of Careers Masters and Guidance Masters, has also published the "Careers Guidance Handbook for Secondary Seven Graduates". The handbook sets out comprehensive information on further studies, vocational education opportunities and career paths for Secondary Seven graduates. The handbook is being distributed free of charge to Secondary Seven graduates via schools, the Regional Education Offices of the EDB, the Youth Employment Start service of the Labour Department and the public enquiry service centres of District Offices.
The electronic version of the Secondary Seven handbook has been uploaded on the iPASS website and the Career Guidance Service website (www.edb.gov.hk/cgs). In addition, the e-version of "Information Booklet for the 2011 Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE) Private Candidates" will also be available in early July so that students can better prepare for their articulation and career planning and ensure their early access to relevant information.
"We encourage students to carefully assess their own career aspirations and situation, and study the related career information before making an informed choice about their articulation pathway. For those who wish to pursue further studies, they should take into account the quality of the institutions, the content of the concerned programmes and the minimum entry requirements, as well as their own abilities and interests," the spokesman added.
