EPD organises roving exhibition on extension of plastic shopping bag levy scheme (with photos)
********************************************************

Members of the public are welcome to visit a roving exhibition on the extension of the Environmental Levy Scheme on Plastic Shopping Bags (PSBs) organised by the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) at Lok Fu Plaza.

"The Government is seeking public views on the extension of the Environmental Levy Scheme on PSBs. Through exhibitions and game booths, we hope that the public can further enhance their understanding of the scheme and be encouraged to give their views on its extension," a spokesman for the EPD said today (June 9).

The Environmental Levy Scheme on PSBs was implemented on July 7, 2009, and was the first statutory producer responsibility scheme implemented under the Product Eco-responsibility Ordinance. The scheme provides a direct economic incentive to discourage the indiscriminate use of PSBs.

"We thank the public for their support. The scheme has achieved remarkable results since its implementation and has successfully transformed the shopping habits of the general public, reducing the indiscriminate use of PSBs. It is encouraging that many people are putting green living into practice by bringing their own shopping bags. It demonstrates that Hong Kong citizens are prepared to pitch in to save the environment," the spokesman added.

"With the support of consumers and retailers, the PSB levy scheme has been implemented successfully. Relevant data shows that the levy has effectively addressed the problem of indiscriminate use of PSBs. It is time for us to move forward. We call for the public to support further, and urge them to come forward and offer their views within the consultation period."

The exhibition is being held at Zone B of Lok Fu Plaza from noon to 8pm from June 8 until June 12 and will be moved to following venues afterwards:
