Confiscation of crime proceeds of bookmaking

     A 56-year-old man and a 43-year-old man were ordered to pay $1.79 million and $7.58 million respectively to the HKSAR Government at confiscation proceedings in the District Court today (June 3).

     The duo was arrested during an anti illegal gambling operation codenamed "Crowbeak" in April 2008 with seizure of betting slips valued about $1.79 million. They were jointly convicted of one count of bookmaking at the District Court in May 2010 while the 43-year-old man was additionally convicted of five counts of money laundering involving $49.5 million of crime proceeds. The 56-year-old man and the 43-year-old man were subsequently sentenced to 12 and 40 months of imprisonment respectively.

     Police take a very serious view of people laundering crime proceeds in Hong Kong. Strong enforcement action will be taken against money launderers whenever they are discovered. They will be prosecuted and will not be allowed to enjoy their crime proceeds.
