The following is issued on behalf of the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority:
The Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority (MPFA) today (May 13) obtained two judgements at the District Court for payment of outstanding MPF contributions of some $815,000 against two employers.
The two defendants, Gain Professional Cleaning Company Limited and Joinway Holdings Limited, were ordered to pay the MPFA the sums of $485,300.06 and $329,899.87 respectively, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable to 162 and 116 employees of the respective defendants.
Meanwhile, the MPFA successfully pursued four claims in the Small Claims Tribunal for some $138,000 on behalf of 87 employees owed MPF contributions by their employers.
At the Tribunal's hearings today, one of the defendants, Paragold Investment Limited, did not dispute the amount claimed. The Tribunal ordered it to pay the MPFA the sum of $45,192.85, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable.
The other three defendants, Lung Wah Imperial Restaurant Limited, Asia Intelligence (H.K.) Limited and Kandy Power Associate Limited, did not appear. In their absence, the Tribunal ordered them to pay the MPFA the sums of $44,984, $42,538.57 and $5,742.95 respectively, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable. The amounts awarded will be reimbursed to the employees' MPF accounts as soon as they are received by the MPFA.
In addition, the Tribunal also ordered another defendant, Chin Ngai Drainage Company Limited, to pay the MPFA a financial penalty of $5,000, which was imposed by the MPFA for failing to make MPF contributions for its employees.
The District Court ordered the two defendants to each pay $930 and the Tribunal ordered the five defendants to pay $189, $205, $225, $140 and $76, respectively, as the costs of the claims.
