Four employers ordered to pay MPF contributions

The following is issued on behalf of the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority:

     The Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority (MPFA) today (May 12) successfully pursued four claims in the Small Claims Tribunal for about $26,000 for eight employees who were owed MPF contributions by their employers.

     At the Tribunal's hearings today, the four defendants, Good Profit Inc. Limited, Wong Kong Yiu Nigel trading as N K Wong & Co., Chiara Thomas Limited and Wong Tze Wah trading as Hair Care, did not appear. In their absence, the Tribunal ordered them to pay the MPFA the sums of $13,494.26, $8,627.12, $3,675 and $250 respectively, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable. The amounts awarded will be reimbursed to the employees' MPF accounts as soon as they are received by the MPFA.

     In addition, the Tribunal ordered three of the defendants, Good Profit Inc. Limited, Wong Kong Yiu Nigel trading as N K Wong & Co. and Chiara Thomas Limited, to each pay the MPFA a financial penalty of $5,000 which was imposed by the MPFA for failing to make MPF contributions for their employees. The Tribunal also ordered another employer, Harbour Earth Development Limited, to pay the MPFA a financial penalty of $10,000 also imposed by the MPFA for failing to make MPF contributions for its employees.

     The Tribunal further ordered the five defendants to pay $185, $114, $81, $133 and $130 respectively as the costs of the claims.
