Statement by the Chief Justice
******************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Judiciary:

The following is a statement by the Honourable Chief Justice, Mr Geoffrey Ma, today (May 9):

"I am much saddened to learn that the Honourable Mr Justice Mackintosh had passed away peacefully over the weekend.  On behalf of all judges and staff in the Judiciary, I will be offering our deepest condolences to Mrs Mackintosh, his children and the rest of his family.

"Mr Justice Mackintosh was born in 1953 in the United Kingdom.  After practising in the United Kingdom for 13 years (where he was also appointed a Recorder of the Crown Court), he joined the Hong Kong Judiciary in 1991 as a magistrate and served in this capacity (apart from a two-year period when he returned to practice in the United Kingdom) until 2007.  That year, he was appointed a Judge of the District Court.  In 2009, he became a Judge of the Court of First Instance of the High Court.

"Mr Justice Mackintosh was among the best of judges: fair, robust, a keen legal intellect, full of good common sense and realism, and thoroughly enthusiastic about the operation of the law.  He set himself the highest of standards and by his example, encouraged all who came into contact with him, to do the same.  He was exemplary and was held in the highest esteem by his colleagues as well as the legal profession.

"Colin was also a very fine person indeed; a loving husband and father, a good and close friend.  He will be greatly missed by all his colleagues and friends."
