The Leisure and Cultural Services Department will present "Arirang of a Thousand Years" by Yanbian Song and Dance Troupe, which reveals the art of traditional Korean dance.
Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture is located in southern part of Jilin Province. The Yanbian Song and Dance Troupe was founded in 1946, and is a well known exponent of Korean performing arts on the Mainland. The troupe has won national and international acclaim for their unique performing style with its strong ethnic character and refined artistic ability. Around 80 of the troupe's creations have won major national awards, including the Wenhua Award presented by the Ministry of Culture, the Five "One" Project Award of the Central Propaganda Department, and the Grand Award at the China Arts Festival.
The troupe has performed in countries and regions worldwide including North Korea, South Korea, the former USSR, Japan, the United States, Hong Kong and Macao. Yanbian Autonomous Region's folkloric style and high standards of performance have won it the accolade of being "the home of song-and-dance".
The programme features the scenery and lifestyle of northern Korea, including Changbaishan's beautiful natural landscapes which change with the seasons and the picturesque banks of the Tumen River that mark the border of China, Russia and North Korea. The Korean nationality is famous for its song and dance, which combine lyrical elegance and fluid strength, reflecting the character of the Korean people. Their music is also rich in diversity, with clear yet complex rhythms and a flowing melodic structure ideal for dance.
The programme includes the group dance "Ballad of the Balloon Flower", "Dance of the Water-carriers", "The Scholarly Spirit"; the pas de deux "A Fairy Maiden and A Shepherd Boy"; suona solo "The Joys of a Bumper Harvest", "A Maiden and A Young Lad"; female solo "Song of the Birds" and the baritone solo "The Bright Sun Shines on the Borderland", among others.
