***************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Legislative Council Secretariat:

The Legislative Council (LegCo) Subcommittee on Harbourfront Planning continued its duty visit to United States and Canada and will arrive at Vancouver, Canada today (April 28).

The delegation visited two major waterfront developments, the Battery Park City (BPC) and the Brooklyn Bridge Park, in New York yesterday (April 27). Members toured the parks and received briefings from the representatives of the Battery Park City Authority (BPC Authority) and the Brooklyn Bridge Park Development Corporation (BBPDC).

BPC was a 92-acre reclaimed site situated on the southwest tip of Manhattan serving as piers. Now, BPC has become an area for commercial, residential and recreational uses after development by the BPC Authority and private developers under a public-private partnership.

The Brooklyn Bridge Park is an 85-acre waterfront park along the East River shoreline of Brooklyn. Before its transformation to a park in 2009, the site was used as warehouses and industrial piers. The BBPDC is a non-profit entity responsible for the planning, construction, maintenance and operation of the Brooklyn Bridge Park.

The delegation had fruitful discussions with the BPC Authority and the BBPDC on the planning and management of waterfront facilities and development.
