The following is issued on behalf of the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority:

To help university students gain a better understanding of the Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF) System and related investment knowledge, the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority (MPFA) launched a university multi-media competition, and an awards presentation was held today (April 11) to announce the winners.

The competition attracted participants from various universities in Hong Kong. Each group had to produce a three-minute video to convey MPF-related messages. The videos have been uploaded onto online platforms popular with young people in a bid to widely disseminate the messages.

"All of the participants showed creativity in making their own unique short videos," said Mrs Betty Chan, Head (External Affairs) of the MPFA, in her speech. "We believe these videos can help the public better understand the MPF System and at the same time acquire knowledge related to investment management."

The winner, first runner-up and second runner-up were chosen from ten finalists. The winning video involved a love story in which a young couple held opposite views on managing their MPF funds and through which, it illustrated the message that the earlier you start your financial planning, the better your future will be. The first runner-up short video used the metaphor of dance, with five styles of dance representing five major types of MPF funds, highlighting the characteristics of the different types of funds. The second runner-up used a "match man" as the sole character to introduce different types of MPF funds and investment concepts such as the compounding effect.

The finalists, which were available on Facebook and Youtube for voting, attracted some 3,800 votes. A humorous video grabbed the spotlight, getting the most "like" votes on both Facebook and Youtube with the message that we are the ones who are responsible for our own retired life.

As part of the university multi-media competition, the MPFA also organised a series of multi-media training workshops for the participants on how to deliver MPF and other investment-related messages by means of multi-media videos. Mrs Chan extended her gratitude to the experts who had shared their valuable creative experience in the workshops.

The MPF provides basic retirement protection to the Hong Kong work force. Apart from making a continuous effort to educate scheme members on the importance of proactively managing their MPF, the MPFA organises a variety of education programmes catering for different age groups, including students in university, secondary school, primary school and kindergarten, so that the young generation can learn about the importance of getting an early start in preparing for their retirement.

The short videos are now available on the webpage of the event (www.metroradio.com.hk/Campaign997/mpfa/video.html).
