Experts from the World Health Organisation (WHO) and countries in the Western Pacific are meeting in Hong Kong to discuss a draft strategy for the optimal use of medical devices in the region.

The three-day meeting starting today (April 11), titled "Expert Consultation on Approaches and Priorities for the Optimal Use of Medical Devices", will include discussions on various professional aspects of medical devices, such as policy and research, health technology assessment, regulation and medical equipment management.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the meeting co-chairman and Deputy Director of Health of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, Dr Gloria Tam, said the meeting would strengthen dialogue and build consensus on the best way to select, use and manage medical devices.

Meeting Co-chairman and Director, Division of Health Sector Development, WHO Western Pacific Regional Office, Dr Henk Bekedam, said that the meeting was necessary to ensure that steps are taken towards rational use of medical devices. He said, "The goal is to ensure equitable access to safe and quality medical devices based on priority public health needs."

Building on WHO's work at the global level, the meeting aims to develop a regional strategy to support WHO's Member States in the Western Pacific in their development of systems designed to make the most of medical devices.

The meeting is attended by experts from WHO's regional headquarters in Manila and from Australia, China, Japan, Korea, Laos, Malaysia and the Philippines.
