This year's popular "Meet-the-Authors" talks in 2011, organised by the Hong Kong Public Libraries (HKPL) of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, is being held at various public libraries from now until November.
Under the heading "Stories of Hong Kong, Affection for Hong Kong", the programme comprises three central themes: "People and Events - Hong Kong Memories", "Remoteness and Nearness - Hong Kong History" and "Artifacts and Emotions - Hong Kong Culture". All the talks are free and conducted in Cantonese.
At the nine talks, which take place from April to August, writers will share their experiences and observations on aspects of local history, including historic buildings, traditions, entertainment, street stalls and heritage.
Speaking on the topic "People and Events - Hong Kong Memories" are Associate Professor of the Department of Sociology of the University of Hong Kong, Dr Ng Chun-hung; local historical enthusiasts Mr Ng Kam-hung and Ms Wong Fung-yee; and the former Research Administrator of the Antiquities and Monuments Office, Mr Kelvin Chow Ka-kin.
The second topic, "Remoteness and Nearness - Hong Kong History", will be discussed by researcher on Hong Kong history, Mr Ko Tim-keung; pop-up books creator, Mr Lau Sze-kit; and Hong Kong historian Mr Cheng Po-hung.
Adjunct Professor of the Department of History of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Professor Joseph Ting, and researcher on local history Ms Chong Yuk-sik will share their views on the topic, "Artifacts and Emotions - Hong Kong Culture".
In addition, the Former Head of Department of Cinema and Television of School of Communication of the Hong Kong Baptist University, Dr Ng Chun-bong; Professor of the Department of Chinese Literature of Chu Hai College of Higher Education, Dr Siu Kwok-kin; Professor of the Department of History of Hong Kong Baptist University, Dr Stephanie Chung Po-yin; Assistant Professor of the Department of History of Lingnan University, Mr Lau Chi-pang; and journalist Mr Leung Ka-kuen will speak at a further nine talks on the same themes from September to November.
