The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

The Hospital Authority (HA) today (March 24) announced the appointment of Dr Lau Chor-chiu as Cluster Chief Executive (CCE) of Hong Kong East Cluster (HKEC) and Hospital Chief Executive (HCE) of Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital (PYNEH) and Wong Chuk Hang Hospital (WCHH). Dr Lau will assume the new position on May 1, 2011.

HA Chief Executive Dr Leung Pak-yin said, "I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Lau Chor-chiu after careful deliberation by the Selection Board. The HA Board has approved the appointment today."

Dr Lau is an emergency physician by background, and has been the Chief of Service of Accident and Emergency Department in PYNEH since its opening in 1993. As President of the Hong Kong College of Emergency Medicine (2005 to present), Dr Lau has made a significant contribution to the evolution from "casualty" to "emergency medicine".  He has been instrumental in the development of emergency aeromedical patient transfer, and is one of the first senior Air Medical Officers in Hong Kong.

Over the last 15 years, Dr Lau has been charged with hospital management responsibilities through his positions as Clinical Co-ordinator and Cluster Service Director of HKEC and Deputy HCE of PYNEH.  He has demonstrated leadership of strategic changes in the restructuring of quality and safety management, efficient hospital bed utilisation, filmless technology development, and revamping the emergency response system.

Dr Lau is also a pioneer in extending emergency medical services beyond the boundaries of the hospital.  His professionalism and selfless contribution to the community is exemplified by his co-ordinating overseas disaster support teams, including during the tourist coach accident in Taiwan (2004), South Asian tsunami in Thailand (2004), Sichuan earthquake (2008) and the Manila hostage incident (2010).

The HA today also announced the appointment of Dr Lau Mun-cheung as HCE of Cheshire Home, Sha Tin (SCH), succeeding Dr Ip Wei-chung, from April 1 this year. Dr Lau is a physiotherapist by background and is currently the Cluster Co-ordinator (Physiotherapy and Volunteer Service, Rehab Shops and Health Resource Centre) of New Territories East Cluster.  Dr Lau has been instrumental in the re-engineering and enhancement of allied health services in the cluster. He also served as the HA's overall co-ordinator of physiotherapy services for the Olympic and Paralympic Equestrian Events in 2008.

Dr Leung Pak-yin expressed his deepest gratitude to current CCE of HKEC Dr Loretta Yam and Dr Ip Wei-chung for their contributions to the HA in the past years.  He also wished Dr Lau Chor-chiu and Dr Lau Mun-cheung every success in their new roles.
