Over 800 young musicians drawn from 13 performing groups run by the Music Office will showcase a selection of enchanting Chinese and Western orchestral music at four joint concerts. Presented by the Music Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the concerts will take place in April and May.
The first concert, involving the New Territories Youth Symphonic Band and the Kowloon Youth Symphonic Band, will be held at 3pm on April 3 (Sunday) at the Theatre, Sai Wan Ho Civic Centre. The two bands will perform an imaginative repertoire including Curnow's exciting adventure "A Day In Space", "The Silk Road" by distinguished Japanese composer Kitaro, Hess' "New York" from "East Coast Pictures" and Wasson's arrangement of Badelt's "Pirates of the Caribbean".
The second concert, performed by the Music Office Children's Chinese Orchestra, the Kowloon Youth Chinese Orchestra, the Island Youth Chinese Orchestra and the New Territories Youth Chinese Orchestra, will be held at 3pm on April 17 (Sunday) at the Auditorium, Sha Tin Town Hall. Programme highlights include "The Great Wall Capriccio", "Fisherman's Song" and "Winter Hunt" from "Life in Northern China", the popular traditional Chinese tune "The General's Command", and "Plink Plank Plunk" composed by American composer Anderson.
The third concert, to be staged at 3pm on April 17 (Sunday) at the Auditorium of Yuen Long Theatre, features various masterpieces of renowned composers performed by the Island Youth Strings, the Kowloon Youth Strings, the New Territories Youth Strings and the Hong Kong Youth Strings. Programme highlights include dance selections from Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake" and Gliè
re's famous ballet piece "Russian Sailor's Dance"; also the first movement from Schubert's "Symphony No. 8, Unfinished" and the first movement from Haydn's "Symphony No. 104 in D Major, London".
The fourth concert, by the Music Office Junior Chinese Orchestra, the Hong Kong Children's Symphonic Band and Hong Kong Junior Chamber Ensemble will be staged at 8pm on May 7 (Saturday) at the Auditorium, Tuen Mun Town Hall.
Tickets priced at $60, $40 and $20 for the first three concerts are now available at all URBTIX outlets. Tickets for the final concert will be available from April 7. Half-price concessions are available for full-time students, senior citizens, people with disabilities and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients.
