Man jailed for 22 years for drug trafficking

     A 53-year-old man was sentenced to 22 years' imprisonment for trafficking in dangerous drugs at the High Court today (March 16).

     The Court heard that officers of the Narcotics Bureau searched a village house at Tai Po Tin Village in Ta Kwu Ling on April 25, 2010 and seized 372 kilograms of cocaine worth about $330 million. Ten men and four women, aged 22 to 84, were arrested in connection with the case. The seizure was the largest of its kind made by Hong Kong Police.

     The defendant, who was one of the arrested persons, was subsequently charged with one count of trafficking in dangerous drugs. He pleaded guilty and the sentence was handed down at High Court today.

     Police reiterate that drug trafficking is a serious offence and offenders may be liable to a maximum penalty of life imprisonment. The Police will continue to intercept any drugs coming into Hong Kong.
