Proprietor fined for violation of safety rules

     Otis Elevator Company (H.K.) Limited was fined $40,000 at Kwun Tong Magistrates' Court today (March 11) for violation of the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance and Construction Sites (Safety) Regulations.  The prosecutions were launched by the Labour Department.

     The case involved a fatal accident that occurred on April 20 last year in Kwun Tong, in which a worker was fatally trapped between the lift car and the landing door of a lift while conducting rope replacement work inside the lift shaft.

     According to Section 6A(2)(a) of the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance, the proprietor shall provide and maintain a system of work that is safe and without risk to the person/s employed.  Any proprietor who fails to do so is liable to a fine of $500,000.

     According to Regulation 48(1)(b) of the Construction Sites (Safety) Regulations, the contractor shall take all reasonable steps to ensure that all workmen on a construction site wear a suitable safety helmet.  Any contractor who fails to do so is liable to a fine of $ 50,000.
