The Leisure and Cultural Services Department has invited ScrapArtsMusic to Hong Kong, a Canadian quintet that promise to transform the stage into an eco-friendly musical realm vibrant with "ingenious creativity" and "positive energy".
ScrapArtsMusic gather industrial materials such as iron sheets, steel sheets, copper and PVC pipes, woodblocks and springs from construction sites, refashioning them into hundreds of beautifully crafted percussion instruments. After a makeover and a good polish, these instruments can produce a range of rich and unusual sounds, especially in the hands of ScrapArtsMusic's outstanding musicians. The resulting show is an intoxicating mix of sound, movement and spectacle, a contemporary Post-Modern percussion ensemble, suitable for all ages and tastes.
Transcending language and cultural boundaries, the group has toured worldwide, covering the United States, the United Kingdom, Mexico, the Netherlands, Spain, Australia, Hong Kong and elsewhere, offering audiences a highly physical, wildly theatrical and thoroughly entertaining taste of alternative music.
The show by ScrapArtsMusic (Canada) is one of the attractions of "Family Fun 2011". It will be staged at 8pm on March 24 and 25 (Thursday and Friday), at the Auditorium, Kwai Tsing Theatre. Ticket priced at $140, $180 and $230 are now available at all URBTIX outlets, on Internet and by credit card telephone booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients (CSSA) (limited tickets for CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis). Other "Family Fun 2011" programmes include "Alibaba and Forty Thieves" by the Naive Theatre Liberee (Czech Republic) and "The Little Red Hen" by Ming Ri Institute for Arts Education. Please check the programme leaflet for details.
There are also "Found Sound Workshops" (conducted in English with Cantonese interpretation) for those aged 10 or above, allowing participants to experience the "Green Sound" together. At these workshops, Gregory Kozak and members of ScrapArtsMusic perform excerpts from their repertoire that show the integration of techniques developed for eco-inspired instruments. They also talk about the creation of their instruments and music, their musical backgrounds, how they rehearse and learn a repertoire rooted in choreography, plus the importance of being green. Participants get to experiment with the instruments, under the guidance of the ensemble. Details are as follow:
