Appointments to Council for Sustainable Development
***************************************************

The Government today (February 22) announced appointments to the Council for Sustainable Development for a new term of two years, which starts on March 1, 2011.

"The Council membership represents a balanced mix of stakeholders from the key sectors of business, social service and environmental conservation.  We will continue to work closely with the Council in promoting sustainability in Hong Kong," a government spokesman said.

The Council advises the Government on priority areas for promoting sustainable development, and on the preparation of a sustainable development strategy that will integrate economic, social and environmental perspectives; facilitate community participation in the promotion of sustainable development in Hong Kong; and promote public awareness and understanding of the principles of sustainable development.

"We are greatly thankful to the outgoing members for their invaluable contribution to the work of the Council in the past years," the spokesman said.

The Council has hitherto implemented four rounds of stakeholder-led engagement process to involve the community in active discussion of various sustainability issues.  The Council has also advised on the disbursement of the Sustainable Development Fund to support community projects aimed at raising public awareness of sustainability issues.
