AMS to conduct first cadet recruitment
**************************************

The Auxiliary Medical Service (AMS) will tomorrow (February 16) launch the first recruitment of cadets since its establishment.

Through group activities and training, young recruits will gain medical knowledge and other skills, enhancing their self-confidence, sense of responsibility, self-discipline and preparedness to serve.

Speaking at a press conference today (February 15), the AMS Chief Staff Officer, Dr Chan Yiu-wing, said, "The Corps will recruit 300 cadets this year, and the target is to recruit a total of 1,000 cadets in five years."

Dr Chan added that a person can apply to join the Cadet Corps if he/she is aged between 12 and below 16; holds an identity card of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region; has the ability to speak Cantonese fluently and read Chinese, and has written consent from his/her parent or guardian.

He said that the AMS will provide medical and health training for all cadets and help them develop positive values and become future pillars of society.

The training programme includes: (1) an induction course, including first aid and basic etiquette; (2) regular training, including skills for Disaster Medical Assistant and civic education; and (3) relevant advanced training courses, including psychosocial first-aid, site observation at accidental and emergency wards, hospitals and other medical units.

To build up cadets' physiques and broaden their horizons, various outdoor activities including hiking, camping, rowing, windsurfing and visits to government departments such as the Government Flying Service and the Civil Aviation Department will be organised. The training programme can also link up with the Hong Kong Award for Young People and other award programmes.

The AMS will arrange social service activities for the cadets, such as tree planting, environmental protection activities at country parks and visits to homes for the elderly.

Various activities, such as annual parades and open days will be held regularly so that parents can observe their children's performance and progress.

Selection procedures include an interview and a medical examination.  For details, please visit the AMS website www.ams.gov.hk .
