The Hong Kong-based Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra will collaborate with accomplished German pianist Wolfgang Watzinger in the "Master of Piano Concertos ¡V Mozart", to be held next month (March).
Under the baton of Dr Yip Wai-hong, Watzinger will join local pianist and conductor Jimmy Chiang to perform Mozart's "Concerto No. 10 for Two Pianos". Watzinger will also play Mozart's "Concerto for Piano No. 20" and the orchestra will play Wagner's "Overture: Die Meistersinger von Nˆ¢rnberg" under the baton of Chiang.
Born in Darmstadt, Germany, Wolfgang Watzinger studied at music academies in Freiburg, Germany and Salzburg, Austria. He has been a professor of piano in the Concert Performance Department of the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna since 1994. Watzinger has performed with much acclaim in major European cities, the United States, South Africa, Japan, South Korea and China, and has conducted master classes in Vienna, Seoul, Tokyo and other cities.
Hong Kong-born conductor and pianist Jimmy Chiang received the Fellowship Diploma of Trinity College, London at the age of 16. In 2007, he won first prize at the fourth International Competition of Young Conductors, "Lovro von Matacic", in Zagreb, Croatia. Orchestras he has worked with include the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Vienna, La Orquesta Sinfˆunica de Castilla y Leon, the Zagreb Philharmonic, the Oradea Philharmonic, Philharmonic Orchestra Lubeck, the Philharmonic Orchestra Freiburg and the Hong Kong Sinfonietta. He has also performed at major venues such as the Golden Hall of Musikverein in Vienna.
The highly talented Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra aims to bring music to the people, especially the young generation, in Hong Kong. The orchestra has performed frequently with a number of internationally famous conductors and soloists in Hong Kong over the past 30 years. By performing popular music and organising concert talks, the orchestra has been successful in introducing classical music and Chinese orchestral music to the public.
"Master of Piano Concertos ¡V Mozart" is presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. The concerts will take place at 8pm, March 26 (Saturday), at the Auditorium, Kwai Tsing Theatre and 3pm, March 27 (Sunday), at the Auditorium, Tuen Mun Town Hall. Tickets priced at $140, $110 and $80 are now available at URBTIX outlets, on the internet and by credit card telephone booking. Senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients may receive a 50% discount (limited tickets for CSSA recipients on a first-come, first-served basis). A maximum discount of 20% is offered for group bookings.
