LCSD to launch sportTAG to further promote school sports (with photos)
*********************************************************

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) will introduce the sportTAG Award Scheme this month to further promote the School Sports Programme in schools which aims to encourage students to develop their own physical exercise pattern and to make it a part of their daily lives.

About 1,800 students, teachers and parents joined the sportTAG Award Scheme Launching Ceremony cum Sports Carnival at the Kowloon Bay Sports Ground this morning (January 28) to witness the launch of the scheme.

Officiating at the ceremony were the Convener of the Student Sports Activities Co-ordinating Sub-committee under the Community Sports Committee, Mr Liu Ah-chuen; the Vice-convener of the Sub-committee, Mrs Stella Lau; the Deputy Director of Leisure and Cultural Services (Leisure Services), Mr Bobby Cheng; the Assistant Director of Health (Health Promotion), Dr Regina Ching; and the Chief Curriculum Development Officer (Physical Education) of Education Bureau, Mr Ho Chun-ip.

The sportTAG Award Scheme is the third subsidiary programme of the "Sports Award Scheme". The Sports Award Scheme was introduced in 2006 with the objective of building a healthy and active life style among students under the concept of "one student, one sport". The first and second subsidiaries of the scheme, sportACT Award Scheme and sportFIT Award Scheme, were launched in 2006 and 2007 respectively to encourage students to set their own sports participation plan according to their capabilities, and thereby engage in physical activities frequently and constantly.

Speaking at the launching ceremony, Mr Liu said that students taking part in the sportTAG Award Scheme can elevate their sports skills by attending systematic advanced courses and specialised training. It also provides them with opportunities to climb up the training echelon and join youth sport teams of Hong Kong before becoming elite athletes.

Under the newly-introduced sportTAG Award Scheme, primary, secondary and special schools students will be encouraged to raise their sports skills by gradual training and assessment on their favourite sports.

The "TAG" of the sportTAG refers to "Target at Gold". Participating students can choose their favourite sports for training with relevant National Sports Associations which will assess their skills through objective tests. If their skills reach the required level, they will be granted certificates and awards, in gold, silver and bronze level, in  recognition of their achievement.

Enjoying a high popularity since their inception, the sportACT and sportFIT award schemes attracted participation from more than 273,000 students last year.

To recognise those students who have paid extra efforts to sustain their sports development and dedicate in enhancing their sports skills, a bonus award of "sportExcel" will be given to students who have achieved all three awards under the Sports Award Scheme.

Details of the Sports Award Scheme and its subsidiaries are available at the LCSD homepage: www.lcsd.gov.hk.
