The Financial Secretary, Mr John C Tsang, has appointed a new Chairman and four new members and re-appointed four non-official members to the Standing Committee on Company Law Reform (SCCLR) for a term of two years starting from February 1, 2011.
Mr Godfrey Lam Wan-ho, who has been serving as an SCCLR member since 2005, will succeed Mr Benjamin Yu as the Chairman. Being a senior counsel and possessing rich legal experience and expertise, Mr Lam will lead the SCCLR in its future work, particularly in respect of Phase Two of the Companies Ordinance rewrite exercise.
The four newly appointed members are Ms Roxanne Ismail, Mr Rainier Lam Hok-chung, Mr Kenneth Ng Sing-yip, and Ms Benita Yu Ka-po .
The four re-appointed members are Mrs Catherine Morley, Mr Chew Fook-aun, Mr Goo Say-hak and Mr Johnson Kong Chi-how.
A Government spokesman said today (January 28), ¡§With the professional background and expertise of its members, the SCCLR will continue to provide valuable advice to the Government to enhance Hong Kong¡¦s status as a major international business and financial centre.
"We are grateful to the outgoing Chairman, Mr Benjamin Yu and the outgoing members, Ms Teresa Ko Yuk-yin, Mr Paul Winkelmann and Mr Patrick Wong Chi-kwong, for their invaluable contributions to the work of the Committee over the past years.
"Under Mr Yu's able leadership, the Committee has offered very useful and insightful advice on the exercise to rewrite the Companies Ordinance, which helped resolve many challenging and complex issues,¡¨ the spokesman added.
The SCCLR was set up in 1984 to advise the Financial Secretary on amendments to the Companies Ordinance and the Securities and Futures Ordinance on matters relating to corporate governance and shareholders¡¦ protection as and when necessary.
Members of the SCCLR include representatives of relevant government departments and regulators, as well as individuals from the relevant sectors or professions such as accountancy, legal and company secretarial. The list of SCCLR members commencing on February 1, 2011 is as follows -
