FarmFest 2011 celebrates local produce (with photos)
****************************************************

Now in its fifth consecutive year, FarmFest 2011, the largest outdoor farmers' market  in Hong Kong, opens today (January 7) at Fa Hui Park, Mong Kok. About 280 stalls will showcase a wide variety of local agricultural and fishery products.

To help farmers expand their customer base and to provide public with the opportunity to shop for premium local produce in the bustling city, the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department, Vegetable Marketing Organisation, Fish Marketing Organisation and Organising Committee of FarmFest 2011 have jointly organised this three-day event, from January 7 to 9.

Over the years, FarmFest has established itself as a major agricultural market, where farmers bring their produce for sale direct to the public and connect with their consumers.  Since it was first held in 2007, FarmFest has attracted over 100,000 visitors each year.  Last year the number of visitors hit a record high of over 150,000.

Of the 280 booths, more than 160 will sell premium local produce, including fresh organic fruits and vegetables, chilled and dried seafood and ornamental plants.  A comprehensive selection of booths selling local delicacies, gourmet food, household goods as well as organic and green products, will also be available.

Members of uniformed youth groups such as the Scout Association of Hong Kong and Hong Kong Civil Aid Service will sell organic pumpkins, cabbage and herbs they have grown and share their harvest with public.  They will also compete for various prizes such as the "best selling team" and "best harvest" awards.

Local organic pumpkin and premium quality giant grouper have been chosen as the theme produce this year.  An outdoor field of fresh organic pumpkins and other varieties of organic vegetables and herbs will give visitors a taste of nature in the city.  Also on display is a giant "pumpkin coach" for photo-taking.  Exhibits including advanced vegetable factory technology and a simulated fish farm will also be featured to show how modern technology helps the sustainable development of the local agricultural and fisheries industries.

Against the backdrop of the organic garden, a simulated old Hong Kong streetscape lined with traditional shops selling local delicacies will create a nostalgic ambience.  There are also interactive computer games on fish and crop farming.  Along with various fringe activities such as cultural performances, health talks and cooking demonstrations, FarmFest 2011 is for the enjoyment of visitors of all ages.

Admission is free. There will be free shuttle bus service every 15 minutes from Shek Kip Mei MTR Station exit B1.
