A 31-year-old man was ordered to perform 180 hours of community service after being convicted of one count of access to computer with dishonest intent at the Tsuen Wan Magistrates' Courts today (December 15).
The court heard that the defendant conducted a cyber attack against an international shipping company on May 14 this year by sending over 1.05 million junk e-mails to some 800 mailboxes at the company. The attack caused disruption and shutdown of the company's server, thus affecting the companyˇ¦s business operation.
Officers from the Technology Crime Division of the Commercial Crime Bureau arrested the man in Tsuen Wan the same day following extensive analysis and investigation. He was subsequently charged with one count of access to computer with dishonest intent.
Police remind the public that access to computer with dishonest intent is a serious offence and the maximum penalty is five years' imprisonment. Cyber crimes are considered as equivalent to committing crimes in the virtual world. Although offenders may try to disguise their identity by some means, Police are competent and determined to bring them to justice.
