*********************************************************

     Five employee representatives nominated by registered employee unions were today (November 27) elected to the Labour Advisory Board (LAB).  Upon appointment by the Chief Executive, they will serve on the Board for a two-year term starting in January, 2011.

     They are:

* Lee Tak-ming (215 votes)
  General Secretary, Hong Kong and Kowloon Trades Union Council

* Chung Kwok-sing (261 votes)
  Chairman, Hong Kong Civil Servants General Union

* Ng Wai-yee (308 votes)

* Ng Chau-pei (342 votes)
  Chairman, Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions

* Leung Chau-ting (232 votes)

     The Commissioner for Labour, also ex-officio chairman of LAB, Mrs Cherry Tse Ling Kit-ching, congratulated the elected employee representatives.

     "The LAB comprises representatives of employees, employers and the Government," said Mrs Tse. "Since 1946, the LAB has been giving constructive and valuable advice on a wide range of important labour issues, including employment services, employees' compensation, labour relations, occupational safety and health as well as the implementation of international labour conventions.  This better enables the Government to strike a balance between the interests of employers and employees while  formulating policies and legislation that seek to improve progressively the health, safety and welfare of employees."

     "The LAB is a tripartite consultative body on labour matters that allows employers and employees to discuss important labour issues on an equal footing. As a general practice, the Government consults the LAB and seeks consensus on legislative proposals on labour issues before their introduction into the legislature."

     Mrs Tse said she looked forward to the valuable contributions of the new LAB members when things get fully underway in the new term.

     At today's election, 11 candidate nominations were received.  Representatives from 368 registered employee unions turned up to vote and 367 ballot papers were declared valid.
