Be a Green Volunteer to serve the community (with photos)
*********************************************************

To enhance green consciousness and encourage community involvement in district greening activities, the Leisure and Culture Services Department (LCSD) has expanded the Green Volunteer Scheme. Members of the public are invited to become Green Volunteers who will receive free horticultural training before serving the community.

The Green Volunteer Scheme was launched by the LCSD in 2003. Currently, over 2,300 members of the public have registered as a Green Volunteer. The scheme provides basic horticultural courses and practical sessions on a regular basis, such as the four workshops on tree identification and maintenance held in LCSD parks and playgrounds recently.

The workshops were well-received by the Green Volunteers, attracting 120 participants. Through the lectures and practical sessions, the participants increased their horticultural knowledge and gained hands-on experience by mounting labels on trees planted along roadsides and in parks and gardens. While enjoying the fun, they also realised the importance of a greener environment and the need to promote this message.

After training, Green Volunteers can choose to take part in different types of voluntary service, such as serving as volunteers in greening activities; assisting in organising horticulture and greening promotion activities for local communities and schools; assisting in planting and providing simple maintenance works in parks and gardens; identifying tree planting sites; undertaking simple maintenance work and reporting any damage to trees planted along roadsides and in parks and gardens; labelling trees planted along roadsides and in parks and gardens; and visually inspecting Old and Valuable Trees and reporting any irregularities.

Those who are interested to become a Green Volunteer can visit the LCSD website: www.lcsd.gov.hk/green/en/greenvolunteer.php. Application forms are also available at the District Leisure Services Offices of the LCSD. Application is free.
