FS attends IMF/ WB Annual Meetings in Washington (with photo)

     The Financial Secretary, Mr John C Tsang, today (October 8, Washington time) attended the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank Group as a member of the Chinese delegation in Washington.

     The annual meetings bring together central bankers, ministers of finance and development, private sector executives and academics to discuss issues of global concern, including the world economic outlook, poverty eradication, economic development and aid effectiveness.

     Mr Tsang said, "Participation in the annual meetings will enable Hong Kong to gain a deeper understanding of the state of global economy and changes in the external environment.  This will be beneficial to our sustainable development."

     Mr Tsang took the opportunity to have meetings with top officials of the IMF, including the Director of the Asia and Pacific Department of the IMF, Mr Anoop Singh.  

     In the afternoon, Mr Tsang went to the White House to meet separately with the Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers, Dr Austan Goolsbee, and the Director of the National Economic Council, Dr Larry Summers.

     He met the President of the European Central Bank, Mr Jean-Claude Trichet, before rounding up his visit to Washington.

     Mr Tsang will arrive back in Hong Kong on the morning of October 10.
