EDB welcomes institutions' faculty/programme entrance requirements echoing the rationale of the New Senior Secondary curriculum
******************************************************

The eight University Grants Committee (UGC)-funded institutions announce today (September 18) the entrance requirements of their undergraduate programmes for students of the new senior secondary (NSS) curriculum.  The Education Bureau (EDB) welcomes the institutions' admission policies which echo their support to the rationale of developing a broad and balanced NSS curriculum.

The Deputy Secretary for Education, Dr Catherine K K Chan, said: "The institutions' announcement of their faculty/programme entrance requirements is a major milestone in the implementation of the new academic structure."

Dr Chan stressed: "These requirements confirm the rationale of whole-person development and lifelong learning underpinning the NSS curriculum, while ensuring that entrants possess the knowledge, skills and personal qualities needed for them to benefit from their learning at different faculties/programmes they join."

"Students' performance in a broad range of learning areas, including Applied Learning and Other Language subjects, is valued by our institutions, and is taken into account in considering admission of students.  This is another step forward in encouraging students to develop different potentials and develop diverse talents for Hong Kong to maintain its status as an international city," she said.

The requirements are formulated with thorough deliberation, with views and concerns of different stakeholders fully considered.  The specification of entrance requirements for specified and unspecified elective subjects, and attainment required, at the faculty/programme level serves as good reference for secondary schools' curriculum planning as well as students' consideration of their choice of subjects.

"Institutions' support to broad-based learning, as reflected from the entrance requirements, gives schools flexibility in curriculum planning and encourages students to choose elective subjects according to their aptitude and interests," said Dr Chan.

The requirements for elective subjects are generally Level 2 or Level 3 in the senior secondary subjects of the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE).  Applied Learning subjects are used as an elective subject, for award of extra bonus or as additional information, varying by institutions, faculties or programmes to meet the specific needs of programmes.  Other Language subjects are generally used as an unspecified or extra elective subject, generally at the minimum requirement of Grade E.

The requirements for the core subjects, that is, attaining Level 3 for Chinese Language and English Language and Level 2 for Mathematics and Liberal Studies ("3322") in the HKDSE, have been announced earlier.

"In addition to the requirements in core and elective subjects, studentsˇ¦ Other Learning Experiences are also valued by the institutions in considering admission," Dr Chan added.

Details of the entrance requirements have been uploaded to the New Academic Structure Web Bulletin (http://334.edb.hkedcity.net/doc/eng/ER_of_UGC_e.pdf). Students may also visit the websites of respective institutions for details.
