Eight drivers arrested in anti-drink driving operation
******************************************************

Police conducted a territory-wide anti-drink driving operation from August 20 to 24 and arrested eight drivers for drink-driving related offences.

During this period, a total of 1,673 drivers were required to undergo the random breath test.  Among them, eight drivers failed the screening breath test and were arrested.  Six of them subsequently failed the evidential breath test and would be charged with the relevant offence.

Between February 9, 2009 and August 24, 2010, 94,571 drivers have conducted the random breath test; 490 drivers were either found to have proportions of alcohol exceeded the prescribed limit or refused to be tested. Up to now, 418 drivers have been charged with the relevant offences.

Motorists are reminded not to drive after consuming alcohol.  Offenders will be liable to three years imprisonment, a maximum fine of $25,000, and they will also be disqualified from driving for not less than three months on first conviction and not less than two years on second conviction.  Drivers with a drink driving conviction will incur 10 driving offence points and are required to attend a Driving Improving Course before they can get back their driving licenses. Drivers may not be insured if they are convicted of drink driving offences.
