Tourism Commissioner speaks on regulation of inbound travel agents receiving Mainland tour groups
************************************************************

Following is a transcript of the remarks (English portion) made by the Commissioner for Tourism, Mr Philip Yung, at a media session at the Central Government Offices this evening (July 16):

Reporter: It seems that TIC has failed to effectively perform its duties. Things like this incident happen over and over again.

Commissioner for Tourism: Both the government and the Travel Industry Council (TIC) have been doing our utmost to make sure that the travel trade is operating effectively and responsibly towards the interests of the tourists. As I have just mentioned, there have been a series of quite serious incidents which may affect the reputation of Hong Kong as a tourist destination. The TIC has set up a task force to look at the longer term improvement measures. I am sure with the support of the travel trade, the hard work of the TIC and the support of the government, there should be visible improvement with the implementation of these measures.
