The following is issued on behalf of the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority:
The Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority (MPFA) today (July 9) obtained two orders for payment of outstanding MPF contributions of about $130,000 against two employers in the District Court. Meanwhile, the MPFA pursued seven claims in the Small Claims Tribunal for some $98,000 on behalf of 18 employees, who were owed MPF contributions by their employers.
The District Court today issued judgments against two employers, Pak Kai Kwong trading as Tin Yuet Fast Food Company and Long Yiu Development Engineering Limited. The defendants were ordered to pay the MPFA the sums of $80,105.31 and $50,642.04 respectively, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable to 10 employees of each of the defendants.
Meanwhile, at the Tribunal's hearing today, the defendant, Richly Engineering Limited, did not dispute the amount claimed. The Adjudicator ordered it to pay the MPFA the sum of $13,744.5, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable.
The other four defendants, namely Panevino Limited, Chiara Thomas Limited, Golden Castle Transportation Company Limited and Idealab Workshop Limited, did not appear. In their absence, the Adjudicator ordered them to pay the MPFA the sums of $40,739, $24,570, $10,005.92, and $9,114.02 respectively, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable.
The amounts awarded at the District Court and the Tribunal will be reimbursed to the employees' MPF accounts as soon as they are received by the MPFA. The District Court ordered the defendants to each pay the costs of $930. The Tribunal ordered the respective defendants to pay $135, $186, $126, $96 and $100 as the costs in respect of the claims.
