Contractor fined for violation of safety law

     Method Building and Engineering Works Limited was fined $40,000 at Tuen Mun Magistrates' Court today (July 8) for violation of the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance. The prosecution was launched by the Labour Department.

     The case involved a fatal accident on July 2 last year on a construction site in Tuen Mun. A worker fell from a height to his death while cleaning a newly constructed fuel tank.

     According to Section 6A(2)(a) of the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance, a proprietor must provide and maintain a system of work that is, so far as is reasonably practicable, safe and without risks to the health of the persons employed. Any proprietor who fails to do so is liable to a maximum fine of $500,000.
