The Chief Secretary for Administration, Mr Henry Tang, today (June 29) attended an activity of the "Passing on the Torch: Affection for Sichuan" National Education Exchange Programme in Sichuan.

In the morning, Mr Tang officiated at the launching ceremony of the programme at Mianyang High School in Mianyang Municipality with some 1,000 Hong Kong teachers and students and local students.  Also attending today's event were the Vice-minister of Education, Mr Hao Ping, the Deputy Party Secretary of Sichuan, Mr Li Chongxi, and the Under Secretary for Education of the HKSAR Government, Mr Kenneth Chen.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Tang said he hoped that by arranging for Hong Kong teachers and students to visit the earthquake stricken areas in Sichuan, Hong Kong people's concern for Sichuan people could be passed on to the youth.  He encouraged students to learn from the Sichuan people their resilience and strenuous efforts.  Mr Tang also said he hoped the students could convey Hong Kong people's best wishes to the people of Sichuan.

Mianyang High School was damaged in the Wenchuan earthquake on May 12, 2008.  The HKSAR's Trust Fund in Support of Reconstruction in the Sichuan Earthquake Stricken Areas donated RMB74 million for the reconstruction of school premises, which include student hostels, a canteen, a library and a sports ground.  The project commenced in November last year and is expected to complete by this August, ready for operation before the new school year.

Mr Tang headed to Shanghai this afternoon.
