SCMA's remarks to the media
***************************

Following is the transcript of Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Mr Stephen Lam's remarks (English portion) to the media after attending the Legislative Council meeting today (May 26):

The HKSAR Government warmly welcomes the fact that the representative of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR has been meeting with the Democratic Party and a number of pan-democratic groups in the course of this week. These meetings have been made possible through the efforts of the Chief Executive and the reflection by the HKSAR Government to the Central Authorities of the wishes on the part of the pan-democratic groups to have such communication in the past months. We believe that the commencement of such communication will be helpful to the process of narrowing differences within our community on the future of constitutional development between now and the voting of the resolutions on the 2012 reforms. The HKSAR Government will continue to try our very best and will make our best endeavours to secure each and every vote among Legislative Councillors for this package to be passed to roll forward democracy in 2012 and to pave the way for the eventual implementation of universal suffrage in 2017 and 2020.
