Government assists residents stranded in Europe by air traffic disruptions
*******************************************************

The volcanic eruption in Iceland has seriously affected air traffic in Europe. The Special Administrative Region Government is concerned about Hong Kong residents being stranded there, and is actively offering practical assistance.   Affected residents should contact the airlines to obtain the latest flight information.

A government spokesman said, "Relevant government bureaux/departments have been in close contact with the airlines, which are closely monitoring the situation and providing passengers with the latest flight information."

As at noon today (April 20), the Assistance to Hong Kong Residents Unit (AHU) of the Immigration Department (ImmD) had received 168 enquiries, mainly on flight information.  There have also been four requests for assistance.   ImmD has been in close contact with relevant government bureaux/departments, as well as the Chinese embassies/consulates to provide assistance.

"ImmD will remain in close liaison with the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China in Hong Kong and the Chinese embassies/consulates to provide assistance to Hong Kong residents.  Such assistance may include provision of relevant information, contact with family in Hong Kong, provision of advance funds for urgent needs and other support," the spokesman added.

Residents outside Hong Kong who require assistance may call the 24-hour hotline of the AHU of the ImmD on (852)1868.
