DOJ to promote Hong Kong's legal services
*****************************************

A delegation led by the Department of Justice will visit Shanghai and neighbouring cities from tomorrow (April 20) to promote Hong Kong's legal services and a forum to be held in Shanghai on July 6 to tie in with the "Expo 2010".

The forum, "Hong Kong Legal Services - Global Vision", is part of the department's ongoing efforts to promote Hong Kong as a leading legal services and dispute resolution centre.

"With China's rise as one of the great economic powers in the world and its enterprises becoming increasingly outward looking, the demand for legal services has grown significantly. I believe that Hong Kong is in a position to share our experience with the corporate and legal sectors of the Mainland," said the Secretary for Justice, Mr Wong Yan Lung, SC.

Mr Wong said that "Expo 2010" would be an opportune time for Hong Kong to demonstrate its qualities as a world class city and its strength as a regional centre of legal services and dispute resolution.

Eminent lawyers at the forum will speak on topics relating to legal risks in international trade, corporate finance and governance and resolving disputes in Hong Kong. Representatives of Mainland enterprises, legal practitioners and government officials will be invited to attend the forum.

Co-organisers of the forum are the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, the Hong Kong Bar Association, the Law Society of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre and the Asia Office of the International Court of Arbitration, International Chamber of Commerce.

The delegation, led by the Deputy Solicitor General of the Department of Justice, Mr Frank Poon, will comprise representatives of the co-organisers. They will meet government officials,  representatives of legal bodies and the business sector during the visit.

Details of the forum can be browsed at a dedicated website: www.doj.gov.hk/legalservicesforum/eng/index.htm.
