Territory-wide campaign to promote pedestrian safety

     Police yesterday (March 18) concluded a 2-week territory-wide safety campaign. Through education and publicity in the first week and stringent enforcement actions in the second week, pedestrians, in particular the elderly were reminded of the importance of road safety.

     A total of 689 verbal warnings and 1 441 summonses were issued to pedestrians during the campaign conducted from March 5 to 18.

     During the above period, Police issued 1 122 summonses for failing to comply with a light signal on a light signal crossing, 119 summonses for crossing within 15 metres of a footbridge or pedestrian subway other than by means of the footbridge or pedestrian subway, and 130 summonses for climbing over or through kerbside fence or central reservation onto a carriageway.

     Officers from Police Regional Road Safety Teams have distributed 26,600 publicity leaflets at 1 068 locations across the territory, including traffic accident black spots, and appealed to the public to comply with road safety regulations.

     During the campaign period, a total of 108 pedestrians were injured and 2 pedestrians were killed, representing a respective decrease of 22% and 60% when compared with the same period of last year.

     "Pedestrians are reminded to pay attention to traffic when crossing the roads. Those who fail to comply with the related rules may be liable to a maximum fine of $2,000 " a Police spokesman said.
