Employer fined for violating safety rule

     Wing Kai Scaffolding Limited was fined $30,000 at the Eastern Magistrates' Court today (March 1) for violation of the Occupational Safety and Health Ordinance.  The prosecution was launched by the Labour Department.

     The case involved a fatal accident that occurred on August 3 last year in a workplace in Kennedy Town in which a worker fell from a height to his death when erecting a truss-out scaffold.

     According to Sections 6(2)(a) and 6(2)(c) of the Occupational Safety and Health Ordinance, the employer shall provide systems of work that are, so far as reasonably practicable, safe and without risks to health; and shall provide such information, instruction, training and supervision as may be necessary to ensure, so far as reasonably practicable, the safety and health at work of the employee. Any employer who fails to do so is liable to a fine of $200,000.
