Contractor fined for safety rules violation

     Gammon Construction Limited was fined $30,000 at Fanling Magistrates' Court today (February 2) for violation of Construction Sites (Safety) Regulations.  The prosecutions were launched by the Labour Department.

     The case involved a fatal accident on July 3 last year on a construction site at Tai Po when a worker drowned while engaged in wire mesh fence replacement work in a reservoir.

     According to Regulation 52A(1)(a) of the Construction Sites (Safety) Regulations, where a construction site is adjacent to water into which a workman could fall with risk of drowning, the contractor responsible for the site shall provide suitable rescue equipment and keep it in an efficient state.  Any contractor who fails to do so is liable to a fine of $50,000.

     According to Regulation 52A(1)(b) of the Construction Sites (Safety) Regulations, where construction site is adjacent to water into which a workman could fall with risk of drowning, the contractor responsible for the site shall take measures to arrange for the prompt rescue of any such person in danger of drowning.  Any contractor who fails to do so is liable to a fine of $ 50,000.
