Territory-wide campaign to promote safe driving

     Police ran a territory-wide driving campaign from January 10 to 23 to remind drivers of public service vehicles (PSV) and goods vehicles of the importance of safe driving.

     The campaign was the latest in a series of campaigns conducted by the Police targeting moving traffic offences through publicity, education and enforcement.

     Police issued 50 verbal warnings, 389 summonses, 3,553 fixed penalty tickets in the campaign, including 15 verbal warnings, 56 summonses and 134 fixed penalty tickets issued to public light bus (PLB) drivers and passengers.

     Of the 3942 summonses and fixed penalty tickets issued, 39 per cent were issued for speeding, 11 per cent for mobile phone offences, six per cent for seat belt related offence and five per cent for failing to comply with traffic signals.

     Police also arrested 16 persons, including three private car drivers, one goods vehicle driver and one motorcyclist for drink driving offence.

  Officers from Police Regional Road Safety Teams visited 506 locations throughout the territory and distributed about 32,000 leaflets to drivers of PSV and goods vehicles and members of the public.

     Members of the public are encouraged to report improper driving behaviour to the Police or to the Transport Complaints Unit of the Transport Advisory Committee.  PLB passengers are encouraged to report improper driving behaviour of PLB drivers to the Police Safe Ride hotline 2754-7668.

     ¡§The campaign is intended to enhance public awareness of road safety and reduce traffic accidents¡¨, a Police spokesman said.
