Air Pollution Control (Specified Processes) (Amendment) Regulation to take effect tomorrow

     The Air Pollution Control (Specified Processes) (Amendment) Regulation 2009 would take effect tomorrow (October 1), a spokesman for the Environmental Protection Department said today (September 30).

     The definition of "qualified engineer" under the regulation was amended, the spokesman said. Besides the disciplines of registered professional engineer which have already been prescribed in the definition, registered professional engineer in the environmental engineering discipline under the Engineers Registration Ordinance (Cap 409) is also incorporated into the amendment regulation.

     The regulation will be implemented starting tomorrow and all professional environmental engineers registered under the Engineers Registration Ordinance (Cap 409) can undertake licence application/preparation works of specified processes under the principal regulations. They can offer advice on preventive measures and devise sound environmental management solutions in dealing with emissions from existing and new stationary sources.

     "Under current arrangements, the trades concerned can engage professional engineers in the fields of building services, gas, chemical, marine or mechanical engineering in licence application of specified processes. After the implementation of the amendment regulation, professional environmental engineers will also be able to provide such services to the trade concerned," the spokesman said.
