The Deputy Secretary for Education, Dr Catherine K K Chan, and the Honorary Adviser for the Hong Kong Museum of History, Dr Anthony Siu, today (September 30) officiated at the National Day Extravaganza 2009 organised by the Education Bureau.

Dr Chan said, "2009 is the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. Our country has made tremendous achievements over the past 60 years and her prosperity resulting from the 30 years of reform and opening up has caught the world's attention. We should pride ourselves on being Chinese.

"I hope that the joint efforts of the Education Bureau and the education sector will help our students learn more about our country's history, culture and current situation and instil in them a commitment to contribute to the country's further development."

A key event in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China by the school sector, the extravaganza featured dance performances, wind and drum music, singing and dragon dances by more than 400 students from kindergartens, and primary and secondary schools. More than 2,000 students from about 40 schools attended today's event at Queen Elizabeth Stadium in Wan Chai, to share the happiness of National Day celebrations.

During the event, Dr Chan and Dr Siu presented prizes to winners of "The 60th Anniversary of the Founding of the People's Republic of China - Greeting Card Design Competition and Salutation Competition". The competitions were organised by the bureau.  They attracted more than 1,100 entries from primary and secondary school students.

Over the years, the Education Bureau has been promoting national education through school activities and curriculum. Visits to the Mainland have been organised with the help of NGOs for secondary and primary school students to enhance their understanding of the Mainland and its latest developments.
