SHA arrives in Taipei to attend Deaflympics (with photos)

     The Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Tsang Tak-sing, arrived in Taipei today (September 13) to attend the 21st Summer Deaflympics Taipei 2009. He has earlier accepted an invitation to attend the Games.

     After his arrival in Taipei, Mr Tsang watched table tennis events to show his support for Hong Kong athletes. He then hosted a dinner reception for the Hong Kong delegation. He congratulated Ho Nim-ching for his outstanding performance of netting a bronze medal in the men's under 58kg event of taekwondo.

     Encouraging Ho Nim-ching and other athletes, Mr Tsang said: "You all have overcome great difficulties, demonstrated exemplary sportsmanship and given your best performance in the Deaflympics. I hope you will treasure the invaluable experience gained from the Games and the exchange with athletes from other places, and to attain better results in upcoming sports events."

     Mr Tsang will meet with the Taipei City Mayor, Mr Hau Lung-bin, and attend competition events tomorrow. He will also attend the closing ceremony of the Deaflympics on September 15.
 
     The 21st Summer Deaflympics Taipei 2009 is held from September 5 to 15. More than 40 athletes from the Hong Kong Sports Association of the Deaf take part in the games and compete in six sports events, namely, athletics, badminton, basketball, judo, table tennis and taekwondo.
