Proprietor fined for violation of safety rule

     China State Construction Engineering (Hong Kong) Limited was fined $30,000 at Kwun Tong Magistrates' Court today (September 10) for violation of the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance. The prosecution was launched by the Labour Department.

     The case involved a fatal accident on July 29 last year on a construction site at Yau Ma Tei when a worker was struck by a collapsing cantilever I-beam.

     According to Section 6A(2)(a) of the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance, the proprietor must provide and maintain a system of work that is, so far as is reasonably practicable, safe and without risk to health of the person employed.  Any proprietor who fails to do so is liable to a fine of $500,000 and to imprisonment for six months.
