USEN tries dual mode plug-in hybrid vehicle (with photos)
*********************************************************

The Under Secretary for the Environment, Dr Kitty Poon, today (August 24) arrived at a childrenˇ¦s workshop in Yuen Long in a dual mode plug-in hybrid vehicle to encourage people to lead greener lives.

ˇ§I am very pleased to have the opportunity to try this environment-friendly vehicle. In July, to promote the wider use of electric vehicles, the SAR Government began trials of two dual mode plug-in hybrid vehicles produced by BYD, a Shenzhen-based vehicle manufacturer.  The trial will not only help promote clean fuel vehicles in Hong Kong, but will also enhance public understanding on this new type of vehicle,ˇ¨ Dr Poon said.

This is the first time the SAR Government has conducted trials on hybrid vehicles that can be charged from an external source of electricity.  During the three-month trial, the government departments involved will fully test the function and performance of the vehicles.

ˇ§The Government will continue to explore with other vehicle manufacturers the possibility of testing other electric vehicles,ˇ¨ she said.

At the ˇ§Designing My Own Shopping Bagˇ¨ workshop organised by the Environmental Protection Department (EPD), children designed their unique environment-friendly shopping bags.

Praising them for their creativity, Dr Poon urged the children to keep spreading the green messages to their family and friends.

Todayˇ¦s event was part of the publicity and educational campaign organised by EPD on the environmental levy scheme on plastic shopping bags. A variety of activities have been held since May to promote the message to different age groups and sectors in the community about using their own shopping bags and informing them about details of the environmental levy scheme.  In the last two months, Dr Poon also joined activities in various districts to promote the environmental protection messages.
