Hongkong International Terminals Limited was fined $30,000 at Tsuen Wan Magistrates¡¦ Court today (August 10) for violation of the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance. The prosecution was launched by the Labour Department.
The case involved a fatal accident on June 11, 2007, at Kwai Chung Container Terminal in which a worker fell to his death when working on a jib crane.
According to Section 6A(2)(e) of the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance, every proprietor must provide and maintain a working environment for all persons employed that is, so far as is reasonably practicable, safe, and without risks to health. Any proprietor who fails to do so is liable to a fine of $500,000 and to imprisonment for six months.
