The following is issued on behalf of the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority:
The Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority (MPFA) today (July 13) pursued four claims in the Small Claims Tribunal for about $54,000 on behalf of 27 employees, who were owed MPF contributions by their employers.
The defendant Lee Yuk Chun Tinny Jane trading as Yee Ka Flower Shop did not dispute the amount claimed. The Adjudicator ordered it to pay the MPFA $17,355.67, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable.
The Adjudicator also ordered the defendant, Leung Yuk Chun Tinny Jane trading as Yee Ka Flower Shop to pay the MPFA $5,000 as a financial penalty imposed by the MPFA for failing to make MPF contributions for employees.
The other three defendants, Union Charm Limited trading as Shun Tak Yue Wong Seafood Restaurant, Ever Winning Development Limited and APEX Goal Limited, did not appear. In their absence, the Adjudicator ordered them to pay the MPFA $30,074.63, $1,418 and $840, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable.
The amounts awarded will be reimbursed to the employees' MPF accounts as soon as they are received by the MPFA. The tribunal further ordered the respective defendants to pay costs of $199, $229, $146 and $86.
